Thomas Jefferson More than a President Essay - 1590 Words

â€Å"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness† (qtd. in Allison 65). Before 1776, Colonial America was a colony of Great Britain. Then, when their mother country became too oppressive, brave revolutionaries planned a Declaration of Independence to rid themselves of their bonds. This document launched the colony into The Revolutionary War with Great Britain. Eventually, The United States of America gained independence at the hands of many brave men and women. Prominent among these heroes and heroines is Thomas Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of Independence. While at the college, Jefferson met a young lady named Rebecca Burwell and â€Å"he did think of her often† (Allison 21-24). Apparently he could not express himself well enough; after he had attempted to propose to her two times, she became engaged to Jefferson’s good friend, Jacquelin Ambler who innocently asked Jefferson if, at the wedding, he would serve as best man (Allison 21-24). After graduating when he was approximately twenty years old, Thomas Jefferson started to build Monticello, an impressive home, in Charlottesville, Virginia (Firth). It was built on a hill, an uncanny idea in those days. But his daughter, Martha, later said, â€Å"I have heard my father say that when [he was] quite a boy, the top of this mountain was his favorite retreat† (qtd. in Allison 38). The building had a remarkable view of landscape without any buildings. When completed, the home had thirty-five rooms. Jefferson was particular about the details of Monticello; he designed a l ot of the furnishings (Allison 184-185). Overall, the house was and is very unique. In 1772, Thomas Jefferson married Martha Skelton. Jefferson was impressed by her talent on the pianoforte and harpsichord. Often, they would sing together and have a merry time (Allison 39).
